Don't read too much into Pak Lah-Anwar meet, says Najib

By Shannon Teoh

KUALA LUMPUR, March 11 - Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak has laughed off speculation surrounding yesterday's lunchtime meeting between Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Badawi and Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

"Don't read too much into it," he told reporters today when asked about the meeting at the Madrasah Nurul Iman in Hulu Langat in conjunction with Prophet Muhammad's birthday which fell on Monday.

The meeting reignited speculation that Abdullah may not be ready to step down yet and that the opposition would try to keep Abdullah in power.

Abdullah is set to be replaced as PM by Najib after the Umno polls at the end of the month while the opposition has not been shy to state its preference for Abdullah to continue as prime minister.

Anwar himself had downplayed the significance of the meeting saying: "too many assumptions and interpretations have been made about my presence and that of the prime minister in Hulu Langat.''

Najib also declined to elaborate on a clear timeframe for Abdullah to hand over the reins to him, merely stating that an official announcement would be made in due time.

Meanwhile, in Kota Kinabalu, Abdullah dismissed any political agenda in his unexpected meeting with Anwar.

He told reporters that there was no discussion between him and Anwar and that "there was nothing more about it,"

He said he was invited by well known Ustza Sheikh Mahmud Al-Mazjub to celebrate Malulidur Rasul to mark the ending of the spiritual development of the Uztaz.

He said that he was having lunch with the Sheikh when Anwar visited them later. He said that he and Anwar were listening to Sheikh Mahmud during lunch and dismissed bloggers' speculations of any political implications about the meeting.
